5 Meal Planning Strategies for Vegan Kids

When it comes to raising your family on a vegan diet, I understand how important it is to you to provide the best—the healthiest and most nutritious food, carefully reading nutrition labels, and strategically meal planning. But I also know that there’s always that little doubt in the back of your mind of whether you’re feeding your vegan family “right”. 

This can leave you questioning everything you do. So, you do what most of us naturally do, look up information online to find answers to your most pressing questions. 

And I appreciate how committed you are to be a great vegan parent—one that you already are!  However, there are some misconceptions online about what is best or healthiest for your vegan kids, leaving you even more confused with conflicting information.

You’re bombarded with so much information online about how to feed your vegan kids and what to feed them and lacking the appropriate support and guidance you need as busy parent. 

This leaves you feeling with guilt about not doing things “right”.

What you need is a shift.

Since becoming a vegan mom, I’ve learned a few tips that will help you feel certain in the foods and amounts you offer to your vegan infant, toddler, and children. But first, you must know that it doesn’t always involve what you already know—and that’s okay. 

When I began to feed my daughter Baby Led Weaning, there were a lot of comments from family and friends about the safety of feeding her a vegan diet. I was told that a vegan diet was not adequate to meet her nutritional needs. I’d be lying to you if I said that didn’t affect me, because it did. Even as a trained expert in nutrition, I began to feel doubt in my choice. 

I began to question whether I was doing the “right” thing and whether I was actually providing her with the foods she needed to thrive on a vegan diet. 

Until I realized that this is my choice.

I had to remind myself that choosing to raise my daughter on a vegan lifestyle was the appropriate thing to do. More importantly, I had to remind myself that I knew how to feed her to ensure she was well nourished. 

And that’s the foundation I want to give to you.

How to Feel Confident as a Vegan Parent

A major challenge many of us face is knowing what nutrients our kids need. 

When there’s so much conflicting information online, how do you decide who to trust and who to lean in for guidance? 

I can’t make that choice for you. I can only share my experience with you as a vegan mom myself and the evidence-based resources to help you in your feeding journey. 

To get you started, here are a few tips to help you move toward a feeling of confidence. 

  1. Remember why you choose veganism

    Many vegan moms often tell me that they begin to question their choice for choosing to raise their family on a vegan diet because of judgement from others or because of articles shaming parents for doing so.

    It’s hard not to be affected by those things. I get that.

    As you begin to feed your kids a vegan diet—no matter at what age you begin that—remember that this is your choice. This is your family. And the impact that you are contributing to our world is far greater than anything anyone tells us.

    I’ve wasted time and energy worrying about what others might think or say about raising my family on a vegan diet. And I don’t want the same for you.

    You don’t need to know everything about veganism or how to feed your family a vegan diet right this second, just believe in your reason for doing so.

  2. Master the Art of Trusting Yourself

    One of the biggest worries for vegan moms like yourself is that you may realize one day that you missed a nutrient or that you didn’t start supplementing at the right age.

    But I want you to know that it’s never too late and it’s never the wrong time to change that.

    It may feel extremely worrisome to know that you may have missed certain nutrients for your vegan kids but you can’t let that feeling take over. You can’t let those feelings keep you from helping your kids thrive on a vegan diet.

    You need to believe in yourself, that you already have the ability to care and nourish your vegan child, one step at a time.
